I want to express my appreciation for the care and concern that was shown to our family and pet throughout the process today. I can honestly say that I don’t think this difficult time could have been handled any better. It is always difficult to decide that it is “the right time.” There are so many competing emotions over the right thing to do. One of the realities is you have the daunting prospect of the mechanics of how to do this, and your people and organization made that concern disappear, and let us focus on Rosie.

I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Cornelius and Fair Winds Pet Hospice. She has helped me with six of my pups over the years through her previous practice in Houston and is now helping care for my seniors here in Galveston. Dr. C. is caring and compassionate, and does a tremendous job with ongoing quality-of-life management as our pets get older, offering alternative medications and treatments (such as advanced thermal imaging to pinpoint pain spots and laser therapy to help alleviate pain). She and Practice Manager Camille Perkins are a great team and have a beautiful, peaceful facility here in Galveston where they focus on individualized care in a personal setting where sofas and ottomans take the place of steel tables and the bustle of a regular veterinary practice. I highly recommend Fair Winds!

My first experience with Dr. Cornelius was a tearful phone call in 2013 about our senior Poodle, Jerry, who we were making the heartbreaking decision about whether it was his time or not. She was so compassionate and patient. She ended up helping Jerry cross the bridge peacefully in our home surrounded by his loved ones. Since then, Dr. Cornelius has provided senior hospice to three more of our furry companions – and helped them cross the bridge when it was time. Caring for older pets and their issues can be challenging, and it’s so comforting to know that Dr. Cornelius is available with her expertise and compassion to help navigate through those difficult times.

She has also been very helpful in determining when it is time to let them go, and with her assistance, that process has been as peaceful and comfortable as it can be for both pets and the humans who will miss them. One of the things I worried about when we moved from Houston to Galveston was finding that kind of quality care for older pets, and I am so grateful and relieved that she has started Fair Winds here on the island. Dr. Cornelius and Camille are a gift to the world. They are such compassionate, caring, and gifted people. They are extremely devoted to improving pets’ lives, as well as people’s. I worked with both of them in the past and always saw them putting themselves last and the patients first. Dr. Cornelius has improved my little dog Leya’s senior life so much. She is a senior dog that was abandoned by her owner, and when I took her in, she was in really rough shape. But when I brought her into Fairwinds care, she had a turnaround!! Before I took her to see Dr. Cornelius, she was visibly showing signs of pain as well as dementia. I never saw her wag her tail or show really any signs of joy. After having one later appointment, she started wagging her tail. I cannot thank them enough for giving this girl a fighting chance at a good end of life. I CANNOT recommend them enough. I am so happy and so thankful they moved down to Galveston!
